The theme

Home is wider than a house.

Home is one of the widest words we have. It can be four walls, or a single person. It can be somewhere you were born, somewhere you ran from, or somewhere you haven't found yet.

We chose Home for Issue 02 because almost every artist has already made work about it, often without calling it that. A portrait of your mother, the view from a window, a textile made from your grandmother's cloth, a landscape of a city you left: all of these are about home.

Read the theme literally or loosely, with joy or with longing. There is no right answer. We want to see what home means to you.

Rooms, streets and cities

The kitchen, the garden, a bedroom that was only yours, the street you grew up on, the city or village you still carry with you.

The people who feel like home

A mother, a grandmother, a daughter, a partner, a friend. Sometimes home is simply who is there.

Leaving, and building again

Migration, distance, the home you left behind, the one you're making now, and the one you're still looking for.

Belonging

Nature and community

A landscape, a coastline, a tree, an animal, a neighbourhood or a community. The wider world you belong to.

Every artwork on this page is by a woman artist who painted home. Public domain, from the collection of SMK, the National Gallery of Denmark.

02The theme: Home+

Home can be read in any way that feels true to you. It can be a place, a person, a memory, a culture, a body, a language or a feeling of belonging. It can be the home you came from, the home you left, or the home you are building.

  • Literal and abstract interpretations are equally welcome.
  • Work does not need to show a house or an interior.
  • Your works do not need to have been made for this call, as long as they speak to the theme.
  • Use your artist statement to tell us how your work connects to Home.
03Eligibility+
  • Open to women artists aged 18 and over, including women-identifying and non-binary artists.
  • Artists may be based in any country. There are no restrictions on nationality or residence.
  • Open to artists at every stage: students, self-taught, emerging, mid-career and established.
  • Gallery representation, formal training, exhibition history and publication history are not required.
  • All submitted work must be the artist's own original work, and the artist must hold all rights to it.
  • Previously exhibited, published or posted work is accepted.

06Photographing your work+

Selected works will be printed, so image quality is essential. Low-resolution or poorly photographed images cannot be published.

  • Photograph in even daylight, away from direct sun.
  • Keep the camera parallel to the work so the edges stay square.
  • Crop to the edges of the work, with no frame, wall, floor or hands visible.
  • Do not apply filters. Colours should match the original.
  • Photograph three-dimensional work against a plain background, from its principal angle.
  • Submit all images at a similar quality and resolution.

08Selection+

All eligible submissions are reviewed by the Women in Arts Network editorial team in three rounds: review, shortlist and final selection.

Criteria

  • Quality and resolution of the work
